About the Project
Reasoning:
As a beat-boxer enthusiast and music producer myself, I would have ideas for songs and would have a beat in my head. While I could beatbox this idea, I would always lose some of the idea in translation when I went to my computer to make the beat. I spoke with some of my other music producer friend to see if they had a similar problem. When I heard from 5 of them that they did have a similar issue, I knew that this product would bring value to a large portion of the music production community.
In terms of the reasoning of the design, I developed several iterations of the themes, and tested that the blend of hip-hop and comic-book style scored highest among the themes I presented.
Not only will the user have the ability to record themself beatboxing and magically turn that into a MIDI file that could be manipulated and used in music production, they could adjust the tempo, use as a drum pad, and change the style of drums as well.
Problem Statement:
Music producers need a mobile tool to transform their ideas quickly into usable drum loops to not lose their creative spark in the moment.
Key Features:
Microphone enabling
Metronome feature to keep the user “on-time”.
Ability for the app to translate drum sounds (kick drum, hi-hat, snare, clap, cymbals) via voice to match the frequency to the pre-loaded drum sample assets.
Place the translated drum samples onto a drum machine grid, with customizable tempo and time signatures.
Ability to change the tempo and time signature on the interface.
Ability to adjust the placements of the drum patterns post recording.
Ability to export the finished drum sample into WAV and MIDI forms to be used on the user’s preferred DAW
